choose between Byetta (exenatide) and Victoza (liraglutide) for type 2 diabetes

Canadians will now be able to choose between Byetta (exenatide) and Victoza (liraglutide) for type 2 diabetes.

Byetta is the new competitor to Victoza. They're both GLP-1 receptor agonists and given by SC injection.

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is an incretin hormone that's secreted by the gut...mainly after meals. GLP-1 stimulates the pancreas to INCREASE insulin and DECREASE glucagon secretion.
